Deals & Steals: Century Media Lady Madness

Posted in Deals & Steals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 21, 2012 by Lightning Slim

Grasping at straws for any linking factors here; I really just let my mind run wild on Second Spin. Wait, four of the records have female singers and are on Century Media records. That’ll make a great title, right?

All prices $US, and I paid $7.99 shipping.

Lacuna Coil – Comalies and Karmacode $7.99 apiece. Just filling in some back catalogue for one of my current favourites. These are from the Waldemar Sorychta years.

The Agonist – Lullabies for the Dormant Mind $9.99 and Once Only Imagined (free with promotion). Featuring Quebec’s premiere girly-screamo band! Weird how In This Moment have already done Heavy MTL and The Agonist haven’t, but happily that’s being rectified this year.

Cemetary – Sweetest Tragedies (free with promotion). Nice best-of compilation from a band with an eerily similar career trajectory to Sentenced.

Excessive Force – Gentle Death Remastered $7.99. The original Gentle Death had the dubious distinction of being one of the worst recorded albums from a band I liked. Fixed now!

Metallica – S&M $11.99. Because in a post-Lulu world I needed to think of better times.

And, going for a lovely $8.99, submitted without comment:

Deals & Steals: Old (Medieval) School

Posted in Deals & Steals with tags , , , , on February 29, 2012 by Lightning Slim

Occasionally, hidden among the tons and tons of gospel music and copies of Dance Mix ’97 at my local Value Village I find a rare gem, or at least a decent deal. Last week, a factory-fresh American Idiot turned up, and this time I doubled my fun:

Faith No More – The Real Thing $2.99. The big breakthrough record for these true innovators.

Mediæval Bæbes – The Rose $2.99. My hometown is such a strange place. Sometimes I think it’s hicksville, but then I find feminist/traditional/pop/madrigal albums at the ValVil.

I also recently had a beer with a friend who was divesting himself of Kreator’s Endless Pain and Pleasure to Kill for $8 apiece. It’s a mystery why he would want rid of the two best Teutonic thrash records of all time, but I wasn’t going to argue. I smell a Classic Album Review!

Deals & Steals – All Roads Lead to Metal

Posted in Deals & Steals with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 7, 2012 by Lightning Slim

All over the place this time around – I really just wanted to fill up the order because I’d been looking for the Overkill so long, so I took a few chances. All prices $US, shipping $6.99.

Nomeansno – All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt $7.99. NMN is never a bad choice. Sometimes, it’s perfect.

Overkill – Under the Influence $7.99. OK’s punk/glam phase – a neat transitional record.

Cradle of Filth – Lovecraft & Witch Hearts $7.99. I got this compilation because I admire CoF’s balls-out weirdness but I can’t be arsed to pick up the whole discography.

Evanescence – Evanescence $8.99. Because I’m a masochist.

Wonder Woman $3.20 and Batman: Gotham Knight $5.10 – DC Animated selections. Because my discount coupon only worked on movies. Also, Keri Russel as Diana? I thought it was Samson who lost power with a haircut.

And the big deal:

Lair of the Minotaur – War Metal Battle Master $6.99. Whoa. Is it Stoner Metal? Stoners aren’t this blood thirsty.

Deals & Steals – OzFest Edition

Posted in Deals & Steals with tags , , , , , , , , on December 23, 2011 by Lightning Slim

A nice surprise as my SecondSpin order arrives before Xmas. All prices $US, shipping was $6.99 and customs (yeah they nailed us this time) $24 CDN.

Prong – Power of the Damn Mixxxer $5.74. Once you’ve heard the pounding remix of “The Banishment”, the album version just sounds like a dirge.

Run DMC – It’s Like That $1.02. This is the single remixed in the 90’s by Jason Nevins. If you don’t like this song there’s something wrong with you.

Napalm Death – Noise for Music’s Sake $7.19. Double-disc best of/rarities collection has an extensive set of liner notes, interviews and one heck of a convoluted family tree diagram.

And the big fat deal this time around:

OZ – The Complete Seasons 1-4, Season 5 and Season 6. Seriously edgy prison drama (with JK Simmons!) will eat up lots of holiday time. I got the whole series spread across three box sets for $80! Add this to my recent acquisition of the complete Homicide: Life on the Street series and my head will be full of crime, punishment and NSFW dialogue for months to come.

Deals and Steals: All You Need is Cash

Deals and Steals goes a bit country this time out, with a whole lot of the Man in Black with just a bit of blackened metal. All prices $US, shipping was $6.99.

Johnny Cash – American Recordings, Unchained, The Man Comes Around, A Hundred Highways, Ain’t No Grave. Otherwise known as the entire American Series, collectively purchased at Second Spin for $32.96. The only missing title, American III: Solitary Man, showed up at The Beat Goes On for me the same week for $9.99. Cash’s late-period tales of retribution, regret and redemption are a must-have for anyone even mildly curious about this fascinating musician.

Also headed my way this month:

Skeletonwitch – Beyond the Permafrost and Breathing the Fire, $7.99 for the pair. Deathly fun with serious riff chops. Have you seen this amazing artwork before?

Blackguard – Firefight $7.99. French Canada’s fast n’ frilly response to Children of Bodom. They put on a heck of a set at Heavy MTL 2011.

Deals and Steals: Gabber Dabber Doom!

Posted in Deals & Steals with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 15, 2011 by Lightning Slim

Hey, folks. This shipment of goodness from the fine purveyors at www.secondspin.com contains more than its fair share of industrial blastbeats, some doomy dooms of doom and a blast from the past. All prices $US (A good thing for Canucks nowadays) with free shipping:

The Berzerker – The Berzerker $6.39, Dissimulate $4.38 and World of Lies $4.39. Earache Records’ simultaneous Australian answer to Slipknot, Nailbomb and Atari Teenage Riot makes big noise in a small space. The s/t is a reissue with a full disc of commentary; band founder Luke Kenny loves to discuss the madness in his methods.

All Shall Perish –  Awaken the Dreamers $5.59. I cheerfully admit I have no idea who these guys are – but they are playing Heavy MTL, so I should probably find out.

Revolting Cocks – Beers, Steers & Queers (The Remixes) $2.39. Shaggy Glassbane and I played the hell out this 12″ single in our college radio days. Never gets old.

The Sword – Warp Riders $6.39. The crew of intergalactic ship Sword set themselves on a mission of trippiness. Most anticipated band of MTL for me –  I can’t get enough of the retro vibe.  I’m hoping Montreal locals and soul-mates Priestess  make an appearance in support.

Deals and Steals: NWOAHM Edition

Posted in Deals & Steals with tags , , , , , , , on March 17, 2011 by Lightning Slim

We’ve got a fearsome foursome of U.S. cruise missiles for this set of bargoons. All prices in the currency of their birth, shipping was a fiver.

Lamb of God – Hourglass: The Anthology $18.99. What’s the best way to get from zero to LoG in a hurry? Why, this three disc set of course. Two of hits, one B-sides. I’d been looking to catch up ever since Heavy MTL, where they impressed me mightily with their Pantera-come-again swagger.

Killswitch Engage – Killswitch Engage (2009) $11.97. Two-disc special edition, still not their best.

The Sword – Age of Winters $6.99 and Gods of the Earth (Free with promotion). Thick slabs of retro-Sab ready for the ale tankard. Priestess’ American cousins. I am appropriately ashamed that I’ve been wearing one of The Sword’s T-shirts for a year now before hearing the music, but now relieved that it’s great.
